Unable to link to Xbox account

Hi, when trying to link my Xbox account to activision account I get an error that says my Xbox account is already linked to another activision account. Problem is, I have no idea what activision account it could be because I didn’t know I had another one. Also I’ve only ever had one Xbox account.
I tried looking on my Xbox profile to see if it told me what activision account it was linked to but it doesn’t provide that. Maybe I should create new Xbox account and then link them??
Is there a way to see what activision account is linked to my gamer tag??
Any tips would be appreciated as I have been trying to find this out for a week.

Go to CallofDuty.com, and log in using he same address "you used" with your Xbox account. It's probably there. Activision account is a CallofDuty account, and vice versa.

Thanks but the problem is I don’t remember what I used. I didn’t know it was linked to another one until I tried to link it and it told me it was already linked. I haven’t played in 10 years so I was getting my xbox account up and running and that’s how I found out

I guess the biggest issue is, do I have to have an xbox account linked in order to play COD? I was going to get MW2, but can I just play using my xbox gamer tag? Or does it have to be linked in order to play?

I'm just gonna address bolded. Yes, you now have to link your Activision account to your Xbox account to play.

I think from Advanced Warfare on, it was optional to link it, and you get bonuses, but since Black Ops 4, that connection got stronger, it wasn't until Modern Warfare 2019, which is a reboot - thats when the Activision/account system needed to be linked because of the dumbass cross-play system.

If I were you and I haven't played Call of Duty in a long time or used my Xbox a long time, I'd just get a new gamertag (and I DO mean a whole new account), a new Activision name, and enable Xbox Live on it. Otherwise you're out of luck.

If you have Modern Warfare 2019 somewhere, you may get a glimpse of where your account was linked to. That may be your best shot. DO NOT CHANGE the email from that menu though, or your [Activision] account will be lost in the database, so write down the address.
